Biography and Background

Mary May is an experienced community leader with a demonstrated history of working in the public relations and communications industries. Her background includes Legislative/Governmental Partnerships, Business Planning, Conflict Resolution, Community Relationships, Education, and Nonprofit Organizations.

Mary was elected to the five-member Ada County Highway District Commission in 2018, serving as 1st Vice-President in 2019, and as President of the Commission in both 2020 and 2022.

Mary is a member of the Community Planning Association of Southwest Idaho (COMPASS) Board of Directors (2019-present) and Executive Committee, currently serving as the Vice-Chair (2022). She was recently elected to represent COMPASS as a board member on the National Association of Regional Councils (NARC). In 2020, she received the COMPASS Leadership in Motion Award in the “Leadership by Example – Elected Official” category.

Mary is an avid community volunteer, spearheading several initiatives including a grassroots coalition designed to highlight the importance of transportation infrastructure improvements and increased funding, as well as to coalesce public support behind these improvements. Mary was a longtime member of the Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce Transportation Committee, as well as the Boise Valley Economic Partnership (BVEP) Working Group. She has also served as the President of the College of Western Idaho Foundation Board of Directors. She is a sustaining member of the Junior League of Boise, past board member of Special Olympics of Idaho and the Education Foundation of the West Ada School District, among others.

Mary was born and raised in Idaho and has lived in Eagle for more than 20 years. She has two adult children: Molly (MA, History) and Matthew (PhD, Public Policy).

I am a public servant who believes in True Regional Collaboration. — A proven leader who has built consensus among diverse stakeholder groups. — It has been my priority to re-establish and strengthen regular communication with ACHD’s partner agencies with a regional dialogue focused on addressing the unprecedented growth facing our county–finding real solutions to deal with congestion. — Championed positive relationship building with partner jurisdictions, helping to avoid costly litigation and broker collaborative solutions that benefit all taxpayers of Ada County. — I have encouraged regular joint meetings between the Commission and all six cities in Ada County (Boise, Eagle, Garden City, Kuna, Meridian, and Star).

I am a consistent voice for Fiscal Responsibility with taxpayer funds — I have fought against property tax increases including a proposed 24% increase of ACHD’s portion of property tax last year to ensure more of your hard earned money stays in your pockets. — I advocated for and helped realize unprecedented financial support from the State of Idaho to help mitigate the impacts of the state’s highway system on local roads within Ada County. — I have successfully advocated for and support gap projects throughout the District, addressing needs such as school crossings, sidewalk gaps, signage, and Safe Routes to School, among others. — I continue to work to streamline processes at the District, allowing it to serve residents more efficiently with significant cost savings.

I am a strong proponent of a Community Focused approach to representation — I have been open and accessible to all, demonstrating a willingness to meet directly with constituents on-site to observe and fully understand their issues while working to find constructive resolutions. — I advocate for and promote transparency in the business of the District. — I have helped foster a constructive and positive culture at the District, ensuring that all stakeholders have a seat at the table and an opportunity to be heard. – I work to find real solutions to congestion throughout Ada County.
